What to do this summer? MakerBay has designed a series of summer activities focused on maker skills and design thinking to expand your network, open your horizons, and have a meaningful summer vacation.

This 5-day maker skill marathon is a comprehensive program designed to introduce participants aged 10 years old or above to various maker skills. Over the span of five days, attendees will be guided through hands-on activities and workshops to enhance their understanding and proficiency in key areas. This program is ideal for individuals looking to broaden their skill set, explore new areas of interest, or deepen their understanding of maker practices.

Day 1
CNC & Sewing
Learn 3D Modeling, operate a CNC and sewing machine and create prototypes.
Day 2
No-Code and AI
Get to know no-code app development with Glide and create one by yourself. Explore generative AI and build your chatbot.
Day 3
Laser-cutting & Microbit
Operate a laser cutter and practise engraving. Study the basic circuit, variable & logic.
Day 4
3D Printing & Arduino
Learn 3D modeling and operation of a 3D printer to print a prototye. Uncover electronics with learning the ⁠coding in Arduino IDE.
Day 5
Woodworking
Use handtools and machine including bandsaws and table saws to build a wooden box.
Day 5
Free time
Combine the maker skills learned and your creativity to create an innovative product.

Small Ideas, Big Improvements 💡! MakerBay collaborates with a cat café in Tsuen Wan to organise a five-day hands-on learning course for students aged 8-12. Participants will learn design thinking, visit the cat café, act as little shop managers, and observe how we can create various tools to help the café. This will be a unique opportunity to learn how to take care of cats, ensure they stay healthy, and interact with customers while having a quiet and secluded resting area.

After the training in woodworking, graphic design, Tinkercad, and Microbit, participants will work in groups to brainstorm solutions, create prototypes, test, and refine them. Finally, you will present your creations to the cat café staff to complete the comprehensive learning.

Design Thinking
Learn the principle of design thinking and how to apply it in problem-solving
Day 1 PM
Visit the Cat Cafe
Act as a little shop manager and observe what kinds of improvement can be made
Day 2
Maker Skills Workshop
Learn maker skills inclduing woodworking, graphic design, Tinkercad and Microbit
Day 3
Build Prototypes
Brainstorm solutions with your groupmates and build prototypes to address the problems you identify
Day 4
Fine-tune Prototypes
Continuing building and prototypes. Test and improve it
Day 5
Presentation
Get ready for the presentation to cafe staff on your innovative ideas. Learn from their comments to improve

Ms. Angie Zhou

Education Specialist

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Angie Zhou is an Education Specialist at MIT App Inventor. She was the founder and CEO of Dreams Come True in Shenzhen, where she developed online coding courses for kids. She also has previous curriculum development, teaching and staff training experience at First Code Academy in Hong Kong.
